The Azalea Youth Soccer League's Recreation Program is for boys and girls of all skill levels, ages 3 to 18.  The Program is intended to teach the game of soccer while building player skills in an environment that encourages an understanding of sportsmanship and teamwork.  Listed below is a description of the programs and corresponding age groups offered by AYSL.  Parents can determine the appropriate age group for their child by viewing the age group table.

Little Eagles - Under 5

The Little Eagles Program is designed to introduce 3 and 4 year old boys and girls to the game. The focus is on getting the kids comfortable with the ball as well as "gently teaching" basic skills through fun activities and drills. This gives them the head start they'll need prior to joining the U6 recreational soccer program. Four-year olds have the option of playing in Little Eagles or in the Explorer (U6) group.

• Five week season
• One-hour sessions on Friday nights, 6:30-7:30, at Walter Fuller Park
• Registration cost is $50 per child
• No family volunteer fee
• Players need #3 ball and shin guards
• First season begins September 23, 2011
• Winter season begins January 20, 2012

Explorer - Under 6

The Explorer Program features introductory soccer instruction for boys and girls with small sided games in a fun environment.  Activities are designed with age appropriate curriculum and fun soccer activities.

• 12 game season
• Games on Friday nights, 6:30 at Walter Fuller Park
• Registration cost is $75 per child and $50 refundable per family volunteer fee
• Weekly practices optional (ask about it at registration)
• 3 v 3 with no goalkeepers
• Length of games - 40 minutes
• Players need #3 ball, pair of soccer socks and shin guards (cleats recommended)
• League provides uniform and trophy at season's end
• Participation in Opening Day Parade of Teams

Challenger - Under 8

In the Challenger Program boys and girls receive introductory soccer instruction with small sided games where the focus is on instruction and having fun.  Girls have the option of playing in a coed division with boys or in an all-girls league.

• 12 game season
• Games on Friday nights and Saturdays.  Coed and Girls home games are at Walter Fuller Park. 
• Registration cost is $100 per child and $50 refundable per family volunteer fee
• Weekly practices on Tuesday or Thursday nights, 6-7:30
• 4 v 4 with no goalkeepers
• Length of games - 48 minutes
• Players need #3 ball, pair of soccer socks, cleats and shin guards
• League provides uniform and trophy at season's end
• Participation in Opening Day Parade of Teams and Jamboree
• Participation in AYSL Polifrone Tournament

In this age group, instruction begins to focus on teaching the players how to strike the ball properly for passing and shooting purposes and how to play away from the ball on a larger field.  In the U10 and older age groups, there are no coed divisions, only all-boys and all-girls.

• Registration cost is $125 per child and $50 refundable per family volunteer fee
• Twice weekly practices on Tues./Thur. or Mon./Wed. nights, 6-7:30
• 6 v 6 with goalkeepers
• Length of games - 50 minutes
• Players need #4 ball, pair of soccer socks, cleats and shin guards
• League provides uniform and trophy at season's end
• Participation in Opening Day Parade of Teams and Jamboree
• Participation in AYSL Polifrone Tournament
• Participation in post-season GYSA Jamboree

Classic - Under 12

• 12 game season
• Games on Saturdays.  Home games are at Walter Fuller Park. 
• Registration cost is $125 per child and $50 refundable per family volunteer fee
• Twice weekly practices on Tues./Thur. or Mon./Wed. nights, 6-7:30 or 7:30-9
• 8 v 8 with goalkeepers
• Length of games - 60 minutes
• Players need #4 ball, pair of soccer socks, cleats and shin guards
• League provides uniform and trophy at season's end
• Participation in post-season GYSA Tournament

Classic - Under 14 to Under 19

• 12 game season
• Games on Saturdays.  Home games are at Walter Fuller Park. 
• Registration cost is $125 per child and $50 refundable per family volunteer fee
• Twice weekly practices on Tues./Thur. or Mon./Wed. nights, 7:30-9
• 11 v 11 with goalkeepers
• Length of games:
  • U14 - 70 minutes
  • U16 - 80 minutes
  • U19 - 90 minutes
• Players need #5 ball, pair of soccer socks, cleats and shin guards
• League provides uniform and trophy at season's end
• Participation in post-season GYSA Tournament

AYSL's inaugural spring season begins on April 3, 2012.  The spring season is open to recreational and competitive players in the U6-U19 age groups. See below for more information.

  • U6 - Coed (3v3)

  • U8 Coed and Girls Divisions (4v4)

  • U10 to U19 - Boys and Girls Divisions (5v5)

• Game Rules

  • U6 and U8s –

    • Field size: 21 x 30 yards (U6); 25 x 35 yards (U8)

    • Goal: 4 x 6 feet (U6);  6 x 12 feet (U8)

    •  No goal keepers

  • U10 to U19s –

    • Field size 30 x 50 yards

    • Goal  6 x 18 feet

    •  Four field players and keeper

    • No off sides

    • Substitutions by either team at all change of possessions

    • Keeper must put ball in play on own side of field

    • Shots on goal must be outside of goal box (except U10)

  • U6 through U10

    • Kick Off @ 6:30pm

    • 40 Minutes Games

    • 20 Minute Halves

    • 5 Minute Halftime

  •  U12 Through U19

    • Kick Off @ 7:30pm

    • 50 Minute Games
